Winter Storms Claim 5 Victims in Gaza Amid Dire Living Situations in Temporary Shelters.

Strong winter winds brought walls down upon fragile shelters housing people displaced by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than four people. This tragedy highlights the perilous living conditions that persist after more than 24 months of devastating airstrikes and severe lack of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Offers Little Relief from Severe Elements

Although a ceasefire has been active from October, aid groups report that Palestinians broadly lack the sufficient housing necessary to survive recurring cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the victims, reported on Tuesday that the deceased were two women, a young female, and a male adult.

Separately, the local health authority stated on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant died of hypothermia overnight.

"The world has enabled us to witness loss of life in all its forms," stated a family member following the funeral. "It’s true the shelling may have paused for now, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to the medical center, 3 members of a single household — elderly a man, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed on top of their dwelling in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than 5 others were injured in the event.

Their relatives on that day started removing the rubble that had buried their family and rebuilding the tent shelters for those who remained.

Aid Distribution and Ongoing Crisis

The UN and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as food and sanitation supplies across Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of the population reside in makeshift tents since their homes were turned into ruins during the war. Humanitarian organizations contend not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.

Fatality Figures Since the Truce

Local health authorities, which is part of the administration, reports more than 440 individuals have been fatally shot by gunfire and their bodies brought to hospitals since the ceasefire went into effect. The ministry maintains detailed fatality records that are seen as generally reliable by international bodies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, stated on Tuesday that no fewer than 100 minors below eighteen years old – sixty boys and 40 girls – had been lost their lives since the truce began due to armed actions, including unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, artillery fire and employment of bullets. These numbers, he explained, represented cases where sufficient information had been gathered to justify documentation, but the overall count is believed to be higher. He added that hundreds of children had been injured.

"While 'explosions and gunfire have decreased' during the ceasefire, they have not ceased," the spokesperson informed reporters at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "So what the world now calls quiet would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he concluded.

Another Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s population of over two million people has been fighting to fend off the cold weather and bad weather away while facing shortages of assistance and a lack of more substantial transitional shelter, which is badly required during the colder season. This marks the 3rd winter since the conflict involving the state and the group started on 7 October 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and murdered around twelve hundred individuals and abducted two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

The local health authority reports over 71,400 Palestinians have been killed in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
