Throughout many decades, Virginia has seen 74 state executives, all of them men. This week, Abigail Spanberger overcame this glass ceiling by being elected as the first female governor in the commonwealth's history.
The former US representative and CIA operative won with a election strategy that focused on everyday expenses and carefully challenged Trump-era measures rather than the individual.
Born in a New Jersey town on 7 August 1979, she relocated to a Richmond area at her early teens. Her dad was an army veteran who later worked in police work; her mother was a nurse and volunteer.
She studied at the Virginia's flagship university, receiving a diploma in French studies. Upon completing her studies, she worked briefly as a educator before pursuing a government work.
“I grew up knowing that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” she told supporters at a gathering in Norfolk, Virginia recently.
At the Postal Service, she handled involving drugs, abusers and money launderers. She served search and arrest warrants, frequently being the only woman on the arrest team. She then entered the CIA and specialized in national security, serving undercover and abroad.
In that year, she and her spouse, an engineer, reached a career crossroads. Residing on the Pacific coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They pulled out a globe and inquired of their oldest child, then in elementary school, where they should go. the commonwealth, she answered, because “everyone we love lives in Virginia”.
Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we decided to shift from a national duty, to local engagement because she was right. Those dear to us lives in Virginia.”
Back in her home state, she participated in an advocacy organization, which works against firearm incidents, and started a youth group. In 2017, she decided to campaign for the House, which others told her was a “crazy endeavour” because no Democrat had won the congressional seat in half a century.
“But I witnessed what the president was implementing with his authority and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I saw my representative over and over again oppose the Affordable Care Act. And I knew I had to step up. So for the record: I was victorious.”
In the capital, she quickly became associated with the moderate Democrats, a alliance of centrist and budget-conscious lawmakers. She concentrated on specific policies: bringing internet access to the countryside, combating narcotics trade and support for former troops.
She quickly established a standing for partnering with colleagues across the aisle and was frequently recognized as the most cooperative member of the state's congressmembers. She was vocal about political rhetoric that she believed alienated centrists, cautioning her party against partisan language that could be weaponised in swing areas.
Along with Congresswomen Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was called a part of the “mod squad” in contrast to the progressive “squad” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
In late 2023, she announced she would leave Congress for a fourth term and would rather campaign for Virginia's leadership in 2025.
Her campaign highlighted themes of public service, advocacy for education and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her intelligence experience gave her credibility on defense issues and she spoke of public service as a vocation rather than a job.
This helped her to overcome Republican opponent her challenger's criticisms on cultural issues, notably the claim that she is an radical on civil rights and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.
Spanberger, who stated that communities should decide whether trans youth can participate in school athletics, cast her opponent as the candidate more out of step with the center of the commonwealth's citizens.
