US Boxer Mikaela Mayer Claims Three-Weight Global Title Honor

The American boxer outpointed her Canadian opponent in Montreal to secure the unified light-middleweight title and emerge as a three-division global titleholder.

The 35-year-old American delivered a commanding show at the Canadian venue, outmaneuvering the local hero over the full fight.

Judges scored the contest unanimously in her favor as the champion secured the WBA title and the unclaimed WBC and WBO belts.

"I've won a World Boxing Organization title before, but this is my first time with the WBA or WBC placed on me, so this is extra special," Mayer remarked.

The fighter, who is also the current WBO titleholder at 147 pounds, won her first world title at 130 pounds. Her record now stands at 22 wins and two losses.

Fight Breakdown

The Californian quickly settled into her rhythm behind a precise lead punch, mixing her offense to the opponent's upper and lower sections.

Despite giving up two inches to the 5ft 11in opponent, she commanded the range and tempo for the entire fight.

Spencer, 40, enjoyed brief success in the fourth round when a pair of straight rights landed, but Mayer regained control, ending the eighth round with multiple strong punches and a clear decision win appeared inevitable.

Her rival was bloodied and bruised under each eye at the conclusion as the local boxer suffered a third loss in 13 fights.

"She's a strong, solid opponent. Credit to her, she was not obliged to take this fight," the champion said. "She accepted a big risk facing a boxer of my caliber. I consistently press forward and put on tough fights."

What's Next?

Mayer restated her life-long goal of achieving an universally recognized titleholder after a back-to-back victory.

She aimed to face Wales' Lauren Price, the WBC titleholder, in an unification bout.

The match fell through largely because of promotional and broadcast complications.

Should a bout with Price - who is expected to be returning in the United Kingdom in the last month - fails to happen next for Mayer, she might seek complete unification at 154 pounds against IBF titleholder Oshae Jones.

"My priority is that I have options," Mayer declared.

"I'd love to do both - go back down to 147lb for undisputed, then come back up and defend at light-middleweight."

A possible mega-bout may also emerge on the cards against Claressa Shields, the self-proclaimed 'Greatest Woman of All Time' and fully unified three-weight world champion, who currently holds titles at heavyweight.

The US fighter, currently a free agent, is drawing offers from multiple representatives, such as one promotional firm.

If Shields were to move down to super-middleweight, the American - although it is not a natural weight - has said she would happily face her at that weight.
