One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, although it is equally on the midfielder to adapt to the strategic frameworks and player rankings essential with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.
The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is about channeling it appropriately. Skill matters but England have learned the hard way that there is consequences when stardom takes over. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
Bellingham had much to ponder after not being selected of the recent team selection. He watched the national side qualify at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He saw the young talent perform brilliantly as a counterpressing No 10. He heard the coach mention appreciating the team's dynamism and principles. Naturally, he has reacted in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus their rivals and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham concentrating on pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that his period not playing has shown him that an international career is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield around the youngster after demonstrating that he is unafraid to make big calls.
“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” the German stated. “Jude displays the edge. It takes that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he has. We all need to help him and establish a atmosphere which he can channel this edge against rivals and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”
The star took up much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming meaningless matches against one opponent and Albania. Any other news? Well, what about another talent? Here is another prodigious No 10 requiring support and direction. He has not played for England since March and has struggled to reach his best this year but Tuchel could not ignore the 25-year-old after his display in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund recently.
The issue, however, is the best way to deploy the various creators at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to select Cole Palmer once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the optimal mix at the European Championship. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s game in the process.
It seems unlikely Tuchel repeating that if it harms the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel prefers him close to Kane. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘We want you in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Or the right wing?” he stated. “Phil will play in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision regarding him for years. In my view it fits his style best.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when the player has not looked himself in an England shirt. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then obviously something is not right, be it his role, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is also accustomed to playing for his club in a certain structure, with a defined role. Believe he benefits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defend?
The manager discussed Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other drilling in goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Intrigue is high.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, he hinted at deploying the playmaker as a false 9 versus Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are other options should he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
At the same time, it is also a chance to get the understanding with Bellingham going. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham assisting Kane to net in a friendly win versus the Scots in over a year ago to discover the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during the team's ties with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.
“This is where at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” he said. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a feeling of the player being on trial. He cannot even be guaranteed to start against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be observing him carefully. Set aside self-importance outside. It will make a very strong England team into an more effective one.
