His national and international initiatives – from the effort to overturn the election previously to current incursions and warnings – undermine not only national and global jurisprudence. However, the issue goes deeper.
These actions threaten the fundamental meaning of civilization itself.
A moral purpose of any advanced culture is to forestall the stronger from attacking and exploiting the vulnerable. Otherwise, we could find ourselves trapped in a brutish war where might makes right wins.
This concept is embedded of America’s founding documents. This is also the heart of the modern framework of international relations supported by the America, built on international cooperation, popular sovereignty, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law.
However, it is a delicate ideal, frequently ignored by those who seek to abuse their authority. Maintaining it necessitates that the influential have enough integrity to abstain from seeking temporary advantages, and that the rest of us demand responsibility should they falter.
Absolute power is not right. It leads to uncertainty, chaos, and conflict.
Every time entities that are advantaged target and use those that are less so, the structure of society unravels. If these actions are not contained, the system fails. Without intervention, the world can fall into chaos and war. It has happened before.
Our current reality is a society and world grown vastly more unequal. Influence and wealth are held by fewer hands than in recent memory. This encourages the privileged to leverage their position against the weaker because they perceive themselves as omnipotent.
The wealth of certain ultra-wealthy individuals is staggering. The power of big tech, big oil, and large defense contractors extends over numerous countries. AI is poised to further concentrate economic and political clout even more. The destructive power of the world's largest nations is unmatched in recorded history.
Enabled by complicit legislators and a pliant supreme court, the highest office has been made into the most powerful and unaccountable agent of government in history.
Put it all together and you grasp the threat.
An unbroken thread links past lawless actions to ongoing threats. Each were based on the overconfidence of omnipotence.
One observes parallel dynamics in international affairs: in wars of aggression, in coercive diplomacy, and in the rampant monopolization by massive conglomerates.
But, raw power does not create right. It makes for uncertainty, revolution, and bloodshed.
The lessons of the past reveal that frameworks designed to limit the influential also protect them. If these guardrails are removed, their endless appetite for increased control and resources eventually lead to their downfall – along with their corporations, nations, or empires. And risk world war.
This kind of lawlessness will cast a long shadow over the nation and the world – and indeed civilized conduct – for years to come.
