In a major move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract bringing in the power-hitting player.
The contract grants a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with compensation of $16M for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.
Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:
The contract includes that he will not be optioned to the minors without his consent and grants him a unrestricted player at the termination of the deal. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.
As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a additional payment of 15% triggered incentive payments.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the Chicago franchise, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.
Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, enters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a last-place season, finishing at the bottom in the division but representing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.
Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, surpassing the single-season record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's coveted Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was shortened to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with fanning 64 Ks, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 career batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. Early in his career playing primarily at first, he has spent most of his time to third.
Murakami's big-game performance were on center stage during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a game-ending double that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind one-run win. The very next day in the title match against the Team USA, he slugged a equalizing home run in the second inning, helping Japan's subsequent championship win.
The lefty slugger is set to be formally introduced at a media availability on Monday.
