Burns Dismissed on the First Ball of the Ashes
That initial delivery of an Ashes contest is far more than just one delivery.
It signifies a nerve-wracking three or four moments filled with pure excitement, when all of the pre-match hype finally concludes.
"To establish the atmosphere throughout the whole contest would prove really cool," commented England paceman Gus Atkinson when asked about this possibility this week.
"I understand there have been multiple historic first-ball occasions in Ashes matches. The chance to join to tradition seems cool."
Like the bowler explains, that opening delivery has created some of the most historic cricket occasions - ones that seemed to establish that narrative and at least proved easy to reflect upon later on...
Skipper Ben Stokes closed innings at 393 for 8 shortly before stumps on the first day of the 2023 Ashes contest
Zak Crawley dedicated his lead-up for 2023's Ashes series thinking about striking the first ball to a boundary - regarding aiming to "deliver a statement."
Australia captain Pat Cummins approached at the pavilion end and Crawley cracked a shot past the covers to thunderous cheers by the England crowd.
"I've always been a big admirer regarding the opening delivery of Ashes cricket," the opener explained.
"I was watching it from youth so I understood several weeks out if if we won coin toss there would be a strong possibility of facing that ball."
"I talked with Harry Brook regarding it when we played playing golf on course - that it could be cool if I could get the first one away and deliver an impact."
The English may not have claimed the series - while Australia dramatically won that first match during last day - but it proved a hint of how Ben Stokes' team would attack throughout that summer.
The English were dismissed for 147 runs during day one in the 2021-22 Ashes series
This moment in Edgbaston proved one of the few first deliveries that went in favor of the English, though.
Significantly more typically they have been telling indicators of the Australian superiority that would be following.
During 2021's tour, Mitchell Starc bowled English opener Rory Burns with a leg-stump full delivery in the Gabba becoming the first pitcher claiming a wicket with the first ball of a series after Australian bowler Ernest McCormick during 1936.
The English preparation had been lacking so at that moment during Aussie jubilation the tourists took a blow to the stomach.
"My emotion just dropped immediately," recalled bowler Stuart Broad, who was watching in the dressing room.
"You have built toward these matches then immediately, first ball, he's dismissed."
The Ashes were gone in eleven additional days and Australia won the series 4-0.
Michael Slater scored 176 during the first innings in 1994's series, having cut the first delivery of the contest to boundary
It is also unsurprising an Australian skipper who reveled in "mental disintegration" believed proceedings were determined through an identical incident 27 before.
Steve Waugh with Australia aimed for their fourth Ashes win in a row when opener Michael Slater began the 1994-95 contest with decisively hitting England seamer Phil DeFreitas for four through the offside.
"It felt as if 'okay boys we're off again we've dominated already'," recalled Waugh, who would feature all five Tests during three-one domestic win.
"Psychologically it felt like we are on top now so let's just continue hammering away. We understand how to defeat this team."
Foreboding.
The Australians made 602 for 9 declared during the first innings after Steve Harmison's wide, as skipper Ricky Ponting making 196 runs
But suppose the first delivery proves just that - a single in ten thousand or more to start the series?
The wide Steve Harmison delivered to start the 2006-07 series - when he sent the delivery toward the grasp of captain Andrew Flintoff at second slip, nearly avoiding the cut strip completely - has become the most famous Ashes series opener in history.
"I tensed," Harmison explained journalists soon after.
"I let the pressure of the occasion overwhelm me. Everything felt so alien to me. My whole body was nervous."
"I couldn't get my grip to stop being sweaty. That initial delivery flew from my hands, the next did as well, then, following that, I possessed no rhythm, zero."
England claimed 2005's series 15 months earlier but were comprehensively defeated 5-0. Many believe that series were lost in that very instant.
"We simply weren't prepared enough to beat
