The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional activity:
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
