President Trump announced on the weekend that he has extended an invitation the family of a National Guard member fatally shot last week to come to the White House.
He added that he spoke to her parents and they were âdeeply grievingâ.
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, twenty years old, was killed in a shooting on Wednesday in DC.
Her fellow service member, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Gatherings across West Virginia have occurred in their memory.
The president stated heâs talked about a White House visit for the parents of both individuals of the state Guard.
âI stated: âWhen youâre ready, because thatâs a hard experience, come to the White House. Weâre going to honor her,â Trump told reporters. âAnd likewise with him, whether he recovers or not.â
Community members gathered over the weekend at Webster County high school in the state to pay respects to Sarah.
Both the soldiers had been working with the West Virginia National Guard as part of Trumpâs federal initiative to aid law enforcement in Washington DC.
âShe was the kind of student that teachers desired. She conducted herself with calm resilience, a bright grin and a positive energy that inspired those around her,â the principal, the principal of Beckstromâs previous school, informed the press. âShe was kind, caring and always ready to help others.â
Service details for Beckstrom are still being arranged.
Officials have charged a 29-year-old Afghan national with a charge of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder while carrying a weapon.
The incident prompted the Trump administration to suspend asylum applications and temporarily stop issuing entry permits to owners of passports from Afghanistan.
Andrew Wolfe, a resident of Martinsburg, started his military career in 2019 and is a graduate of Musselman high school, per the Associated Press.
He is still undergoing care and is âfighting for his lifeâ, the stateâs governor Morrisey mentioned on television.
Attorney general Bondi told the program that she aimed to visit the family.
Beckstrom, from Summersville, graduated from Webster County high school in 2023 and enlisted soon after, working as a law enforcement officer with distinction, according to the state guard.
âShe had a lot of compassion and she certainly had bravery,â Morrisey told the audience at the vigil. âThough her life ended too soon, she has left a mark thatâs going to endure.â
