The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
