The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his campaign.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly following his electoral win in November.
"The choice rested on the security of my family and the importance of focusing my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," Mamdani said in his announcement.
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his opponents, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he came from a prominent family.
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his humble Astoria apartment.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
His former home is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
