Among every mature cartoon movies I’ve personally watched, nothing has remained with me as much as the terror-laced ending of a viscerally violent as well as overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spanish filmmaker developed a grim, somber , frequently brutal universe that included a few small , desolate hints of optimism.
Although Unicorn Wars feels like it originated from an impulse to advance the medium further, the director explained that it was actually an attempt to express a widespread, cross-cultural theme concerning “the common origin of each battle.”
That idea is communicated via a group of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously based on a popular series of lovable figures.
Growing up in a society centered on militarism and the defense industry, numerous the bears are obsessed with slaughtering unicorns, because of a holy book that tells them they used to be masters of the woods, before the unicorns forced them out.
A few haven’t fully bought into the propaganda, , would rather experiment with drugs and mate outdoors.
Unlike their friendly equivalents, these vivid animals show sexual organs , obvious urges.
For one especially vicious, pessimistic creature, the bear named Bluey, the conflict against the unicorns turns into a path to control — and specifically to dominance above his softer, nicer brother Tubby.
Bluey is a bully , an obvious sociopath , and as horror overcomes his group and kills his teammates individually, he seizes more and more control on his own behalf, via progressively gory, destructive ways.
At the same time, the horned creatures are experiencing their own nightmare, as a growing, harmful creature in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it seems like a lighthearted film,” the director said. “But then it evolves into a more dramatic and sorrowful film. And ultimately, it transforms into a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars begins feeling a bit like one of the most whimsical movies from a legendary animator, which find a mischievous joy in letting drawn beings curse, engage in violence, or have intimate relations.
Afterward it evolves into something more like a more grim work from the same artist, with increasingly explicit brutality and a noticeable link to genuine suffering of war.
Ultimately, it is an outright extreme drama massacre.
The horror that turns the film a Halloween-friendly viewing begins well before than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted gorehounds, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who desire to watch something they’ve never watched previously, and can endure a narrative that pulls no restraint.
See it in a dark room free from interruptions, and the conclusion will dig under your skin and take up residence there.
