The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a rollercoaster last day of competition.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight foot to seal the win, repeating his sole prior tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off win over the same opponent.
The champion entered the last day with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.
This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better person. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” said the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to make up, coming up one shot behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a stunning 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
