If Jude Bellingham wants to earn his place back into the English top starting eleven, it would be smart to cut out the unnecessary reactions. The way he reacted after noticing that the substitute board was going up following a night of uneven play in the match against Albania was unacceptable.
"I don’t want to blow it out of proportion but I hold to my words 'behaviour is key' and consideration for the teammates who substitute on," Tuchel said. "Choices are taken and you must accept them as a player."
There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no need for a tantrum. Harry Kane had only moments earlier made it England leading by two in a dead rubber qualifier, with only six minutes remaining and the player, after a below-par performance, had just been booked for a foul on Armando Broja. It was not a debatable decision. Indeed it might have been reckless for the manager to not substitute him because there was a risk he would be suspended of the opening game of the competition by getting a second yellow card.
However, the player turned the spotlight on himself. There was no disguising the young midfielder's annoyance when he clocked that he was going to make way for a teammate. His arms went up in exasperation and although he accepted the coach's hand after making his way to the bench there was no doubt that the head coach did not appreciate it.
This is the challenge for Bellingham. He congratulated Marcus Rashford for delivering the cross for Harry Kane to score his second goal, but everything else was self-defeating. It is not as if complaining was going to alter the decision. The coach has talked so much about respecting team hierarchies and the value of showing proper conduct.
He, omitted from the previous squad, has faced close inspection upon his return to the team recently. Essentially he has been on trial and his actions haven't benefited him by reacting to his substitution as England wrapped up a perfect qualifying campaign by seeing off a spirited effort from the Albanian team.
This implies it's unclear on whether England function at their best when Bellingham plays. What we saw was open to interpretation. There was experimentation by the coach in the beginning. He has given the squad organization and direction in recent months, using a holding player, a box-to-box player, an attacking midfielder and out-and-out wingers, but it felt different versus Albania. Quansah was handed his international debut, Wharton started for the first time at this level and the use of Stones as a makeshift midfielder meant there was faint echo to City's 2023 treble winners.
Bellingham had ups and downs. He set up a shot for his teammate during the second half but frequently appeared trying too hard. He made many rushed, misplaced passes. There was a needless bit of aggro with an Albania midfielder early on. England were ragged after halftime. A scoring chance for the opponents came after he lost the ball cheaply. His booking occurred when an opponent took the ball to Broja and brought down the former Chelsea striker.
Ultimately the squad's strength made the difference. Tuchel threw on the Manchester City player, who looked more comfortable to the role that Bellingham had played earlier in the match, and Saka. Eventually Saka delivered a set-piece for Kane to open the scoring. This served as a reminder that dead-ball situations are going to be vital in the upcoming tournament.
However, Bellingham was the story. The brilliance of the winger's delivery for the second goal was partly forgotten in the ridiculousness of the player change. At the end, all eyes were on Bellingham. Tuchel came over to his side and pushed the Real Madrid midfielder to acknowledge the travelling England fans. Their relationship is not broken. Tuchel is not willing to abandon him at this stage. Yet whether Tuchel is inclined to offer him the central position is not guaranteed.
