The city's Leader Orders Probe into Deadly Fire that Claimed Lives of 151

The city's leader, John Lee, has mandated the establishment of an separate inquiry panel to investigate the cause of a devastating fire that claimed the lives of 151 individuals.

A Blaze of Unprecedented Scale

This past Wednesday, most of the apartment buildings at the estate—which had been undergoing extensive renovations—went up in flames. A probe subsequently revealed that protective netting surrounding the buildings failed to meet fire safety regulations.

At least 13 people have been taken into custody over alleged culpable homicide, among them the senior figures of a construction company.

"It is a terrible tragedy, it is a major blaze. Yes, we need reform. We have uncovered shortcomings in various phases. Hence we must respond rigorously to make certain all these gaps are eliminated," stated the leader.

Investigation and Aftermath

Background and Resident Profile

Wang Fuk Court was constructed in the early 1980s and had offered close to 2,000 units for some 4,600 occupants, according to a 2021 government census.

Nearly 40% of its residents are believed to be at least 65 years of age. Some have resided in the subsidised housing estate from its inception.

The city's second-worst blaze on in history claimed 176 lives in 1948 and was the result of a blast on the lower level at a multi-story storage facility. The most deadly was at a sporting venue in the early 1900s, when more than 600 attendees perished.
