The NBA campaign begins now, signaling the initial occasion in a ten years that Aussie pair of biggest basketball names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are unsigned.
Their absence signals a transition period, as Boomers’ guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as essential players for contending teams, with recently signed nine-figure contracts making them some of Australia’s top sporting earners.
But they are not alone. Fourteen Australians are expected to play for minutes around the league, ranging from experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to intriguing rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
After protracted discussions with the Bulls, Giddey finally inked his rookie extension worth $100m (A$153 million) over four years last month. It's a major deal for the Melbourne native, but in NBA terms it is affordable for Giddey’s position and profile as a lead playmaker. Hesitation for Chicago’s front office to offer a max deal means the young star begins this season with a point to make.
Having been traded by Oklahoma City at the beginning of last campaign, he observed as his old team charged to the NBA championship without him. As the Bulls look to reach the postseason in the less competitive Eastern Conference, he will need to show his shooting and defensive skills are starter-worthy or else he may slide towards the NBA’s fringe.
The guard agreed to the identical contract as Giddey recently, and after his most-improved player award last year, the Atlanta player's trajectory has taken off in Atlanta following his departure from the Pelicans. He is now praised as one of the NBA's best defensive specialists, and topped the league in takeaways with three per game – more than one whole steal per match greater than the tally of the runner-up.
Performing next to flamboyant Trae Young in the Hawks, the youngster can be successful this season as a secondary ballhandler and elite defender as long as the team advance to the postseason. But if he can improve his three-point shooting, which was subpar last year, and continue to develop his passing and driving, Daniels could become one of the league’s most versatile players.
Indiana wing the rookie has emerged as a fan favourite in Indiana following a succession of highlight-reel slam dunks in exhibition games. His acrobatics prompted NBA personality Pat Beverley to describe him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a long time”, and an opportunity to the All-Star slam dunk competition could be a possibility.
After playing just eight minutes per contest over 50 games in his rookie campaign, the former Maribyrnong College player is in contention for a Indiana rotation that might favor young players following setback to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Playmaker Proctor dropped in the June draft down to the second round, where playoff hopefuls Cleveland picked him. The Cavs are front-runners to make the NBA finals from the East, so it would be rare for a first-year player taken in the late picks to see significant playing minutes. But the Sydney product has earned minutes in pre-season, and his pro-level shooting gives him a chance to contribute.
Veteran centre Jock Landale has a chance to secure the starting five position in Memphis given top prospect Zach Edey will be out for the opening of the season after ankle surgery.
In Portland, Duop Reath is the experienced reserve to young centres Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play consistent action if the Blazers find themselves in the hunt. His teammate Matisse Thybulle is expected to be used as a defensive specialist off the bench.
In the Hornets, Josh Green's off-season shoulder surgery has left him with no return date to come back. The player still has a contract for the upcoming year, but won’t want to give his teammates at the rebuilding Hornets an excessive advantage. And injury has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee problem and has missed key pre-season chances in Dallas.
Then there are those who are not expected to see a lot of, if any, court time this year. Veteran Joe Ingles is returned in Minnesota, but seems to be little more than a big brother keeping Anthony Edwards focused.
Rookie Rocco Zikarsky is expected to be nurtured by Minnesota Timberwolves through their affiliate team. Other rookies Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Golden State Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the more seasoned Luke Travers will be hoping to earn minutes with Proctor for the Cavaliers.
Should anyone question Patty Mills was planning to end his career, he answered them with a workout video posted on his social media over the weekend, showing the 37-year-old is still sharp and focused on landing another league deal.
What Simmons is thinking is anyone’s guess after an off-season in Australia, going fishing and playing with a Sherrin. Although he posted on social media last month to deny suggestions he was retired, the 29-year-old – an elite player as recently as 2021 – has not yet surface.
