Including complete newcomers will soon be scaling protected Peak District crags on this short course. Learners will learn tying in, belaying and multiple climbing techniques, plus abseiling down. Limited to six participants to a single guide, there is plenty of one-on-one guidance and custom goals. The training is appropriate for all individuals aged 13 and over, ranging from absolute beginners to those with a bit of indoor experience. It is non-residential course, but there is a list of suggested, reasonably-priced places to stay nearby, such as campgrounds, hostels, bed and breakfasts and inns. The venue is 10 minutes’ walk from Bamford railway station, situated on the rail route from Manchester to Sheffield.

This historic hillside village, a ancient town in southern Spain, approximately a short drive from Granada, is the breathtaking location for this creative getaway. Painters of all abilities – even novices – will discover how to conceive and execute modern art. Some time will be spent in the open air, working on tutorials in the open. These charcoal drawings and paintings will then be developed in the workspace, with attendees completing several abstract landscapes in acrylics to be shown in the local community. The group has sole use of the hotel, which is set around an central patio and has a rooftop with views over the countryside. The price covers five days’ painting tuition; full board; and an excursion to the local castle and other points of interest.

This Mediterranean culinary holiday, based at a riverside villa in the inland Portuguese region, is inspired by the plant-based cuisine of renowned chefs. Participants will master the art of selection of small dishes, attend a hands-on falafel session, perfect mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains like spicy mushroom ragu and moussaka. The schedule includes trips to the village market and a nearby winery to sample Portuguese wines, along with free time for walks by the Funcho River, to relax on the terrace or take a dip in the infinity pool. The villa, a renovated rural property, has five bedrooms, as well as glamping tents in the grounds.

This energetic camp is an uplifting, inclusive weekend dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The format throughout the camp is a party-style warm-up session, followed by three hour-and-a-half classes covering different urban dance forms, then an hour-long jam to show off those solos. Participants are divided into levels according to ability and experience, so it is perfect for those who are brand new to popping and locking, all the way to advanced dancers or instructors. This event does not provide accommodation but there are a number of hostels and hotels within walking distance, and it is 23-35 minutes by rail into London.

This coastal town is the ideal location for a maritime music retreat. Participants will be taught traditional shanties from a experienced musician, and try their hand at writing their own. There will be vocal warmups, breathing exercises, performance tips and a closing performance. The retreat is based at a rural hotel overlooking St Ives Bay. Full board are included, such as a traditional tea on arrival, cooked or continental breakfasts, lunches to go and evening meals. Traditional rum, unfortunately, is not provided. Writer and lecturer an experienced instructor conducts the daily workshops on this authors' getaway. He explores everything from plot, character development, locations and tension, to submitting work to agents. A co-host, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will co-host events at the start and finish of the week. The retreat is held at a village-style hotel in Vamos at the foot of the White mountains – 10 one- and two-bedroom cottages are set around a central garden with a pool (companions are welcome to come along). On the last night, aspiring writers mark the occasion with a musical performance in the garden and a farewell dinner.

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a host of courses on eco-living: from creating habitats to upcycling. This weekend introduction will help attendees get to grips with the fundamentals of beekeeping, explore the biology of bees and learn about their environmental benefits. It is designed to produce “ecologically mindful beekeepers”. The weekend is also a chance to relax in the organization's sustainably managed woodlands, which are habitat for polecats, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and uncommon bird species. Bed and breakfast the evening prior is 80 pounds, and all meals and lodging for the weekend is 97 pounds.

These new weekend sailing courses are spent on dinghies and Dufours on the estuary in Essex. They are aimed at adult beginners learning the ropes or those with some knowledge who want a skills update. Sailors can hone their steering, build their seamanship and aim for the recognized levels one to three in a fun, welcoming environment. There are non-residential and overnight options, staying in simple dorms in the waterfront sailing school. The day option includes lunches, while the residential package includes two nights’ accommodation and all meals, from full English breakfasts to BBQ dinners.
