Team Confirm Ødegaard Suffers Medial Collateral Ligament Damage

The club has announced that Martin Ødegaard has withdrawn from the national team for upcoming matches against New Zealand and Israel after sustaining a MCL damage to his knee in the 2-0 victory over their opponents on Saturday.

Ødegaard collapsed holding his knee after a challenge from Crysencio Summerville in the first half at the Emirates and tried repeatedly to carry on after receiving treatment before being substituted by Martín Zubimendi. The manager said post-game that Ødegaard had departed the stadium with his knee supported and admitted his captain was “pessimistic about it.”

But while Declan Rice is expected to meet up with the national team this week despite also being substituted against West Ham with a back problem, Arsenal confirmed on Sunday that Ødegaard had withdrawn from the Norway squad and it is understood they are optimistic that he will only be out for weeks rather than a long period. “Martin will undergo further evaluation and treated by our staff during the international window, with the goal of a return to action as soon as possible,” Arsenal said in a statement.

Ødegaard has experienced an injury-hit start to the new campaign after dealing with a shoulder problem that caused him to leave against Leeds and Nottingham Forest. He will be alongside Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Noni Madueke on the injury list, while the recent acquisition Piero Hincapié is expected to return from a groin issue after the international break.
