Populist billionaire Andrej Babiš has clinched the Czech legislative polls in a stunning political return that sets the nation on a path away from supporting Ukraine and towards Hungary and Slovakia, which have embraced a pro-Russian stance.
With electoral returns from about 98% of election precincts processed by the statistics office, Babiš’s ANO party obtained a 35% share. They were pursued by the pro-western coalition of the sitting leader, Petr Fiala, with 23 percent. This faction had defeated Babiš in the 2021 election.
The election spanning two days assigned 200 seats in the chamber of deputies. A association of local leaders known as STAN, also a component of Fiala’s government, had 11.1% of the vote, with an additional supporter of Fiala, the Pirate Party, reaching 8.7 percent.
The group opposing migration, the Freedom and Direct Democracy movement, got 7.9% while a right-leaning party calling itself the Motorists' party earned 6.8%. These two are possible allies for Babiš if he wants to have a government with a majority.
With the victory, Babiš is expected to unite with the group of prime ministers Viktor Orban of Hungary and Robert Fico of Slovakia, whose states have declined to offer military aid to Ukraine, continue to import Russian oil and resist EU sanctions on Russia.
The Czech Republic has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s extensive offensive in early 2022. The nation has supplied military equipment including substantial arms to the Ukrainian armed forces and is spearheading an program that obtains artillery shells Ukraine urgently requires from states beyond the European Union.
Babiš has questioned such support and also resisted wholeheartedly backing a Nato commitment to markedly boost defence spending.
He collaborated with his ally Orbán the previous year to establish a new partnership in the European parliament, the “Patriots Alliance”, to represent hard-right groups, a significant shift from the centrist Renew faction that Babiš was formerly part of.
