The chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the United Kingdom might have reached peak pizza while broadening the franchise into chicken products has been ousted after conflicts with its directors.
Andrew Rennie is exiting after a brief tenure in leadership, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the company's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a long-term chief.
The outgoing executive, who worked for Domino's for more than two decades, had attempted to pivot Britain's leading pizza takeaway chain towards chicken offerings, stating in a recent interview there was not “significant expansion” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He observed chicken was the fastest-growing protein in the globe.
Reports indicate that there was friction between the CEO and the board over his focus and business vision, although Domino's release said he was departing “by mutual agreement”.
In the autumn, Domino's launched its chicken-focused offering – which Rennie described as a “bold new chapter” for the company – and is piloting it in 210 outlets in the North West region and Northern Ireland.
While the company is still planning to expand it across its extensive network next year as intended, it views chicken products as a supplement for its core pizza business.
Bull, the company chair, stated: “The board believes that there are a number of opportunities to boost expansion and performance improvement in Domino's core business. We are focused on identifying the suitable leader to oversee the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said transactions fell by 1.5% in the Q3. In the summer, it cautioned that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it blamed economic uncertainty in the lead-up to the government announcement and rising wage costs for below-target performance and a significant fall in six-month income.
Competitors are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain revealed the closing of multiple locations a month ago, after the firm behind its UK venues faced financial collapse.
Responding to customer preferences towards better nutrition, Domino's has rolled out light products, such as its Thin & Crispy range of bakes below 400 kcals as well as plant-based and gluten-free pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 kcals. A big margherita has 2,171, while a individual has 909 calories.
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and previously worked for the gambling company a well-known operator. It is thought that she prefers not to take on the chief executive role long-term.
She commented: “We have a number of current expansion and efficiency programs that we will be concentrating on implementing at speed.”
She said these included further work on the organization's procurement system and new item creation, and its customer retention initiative.
Domino's is also without a full-time CFO until March 16, when a new appointee starts from the Irish cider and beer maker a well-known firm. In the meantime, Snow serves as temporary CFO.
