New York state attorney general has rolled out a recent digital platform urging citizens to provide images and footage of immigration raids across New York. This action follows a day after a significant enforcement action shook Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting mass protests.
A US congressman revealed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were arrested and kept for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Demonstrations broke out in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen deserves to exist without intimidation," state officials wrote in a release.
"If you witnessed and documented ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to submit that material with my office. We are committed to reviewing these submissions and investigating any violations of law."
The portal offers options to send visual evidence of the incident, along with a field to specify where it occurred. Before submitting, individuals must tick a box that states that "the attorney general could utilize any evidence provided in a public document, such as in a lawsuit or public report."
The enforcement action, which witnesses say included dozens of ICE personnel, occurred in a popular area of the city where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are regularly available en masse – typically to visitors.
Videos of the incident depict numerous masked and armed officers zip-tying and detaining a person, and shoving away witnesses. Crowds of residents trailed the agents through the streets. An military-style transport was observed rolling through the city streets.
At a news conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, stated that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be arrested for without cause." He noted the individuals were freed on the following day with no charges filed.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman stated. "This represents a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is purely a pretext to incite violence for the government to deploy the military to stop violence that they have created."
Fury over the ICE raid escalated – every political contenders criticized the operation, along with NY's governor.
"Yet again, the current administration opts for oppressive displays that instill panic, not safety. It has to end," a contender declared.
The city's community groups spoke out too.
"ICE raided the neighborhood with armored transports, hooded officers and riot gear to go after small merchants working to survive. This action had no relation to community security and was entirely about frightening communities and communities," remarked the leader of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE policy prohibits the holding of citizens and the bureau has said it refrains from take into custody American nationals. However, independent reporting has found that more than 170 citizens have been taken illegally by ICE during the period of the current administration.
ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in New York and nationwide recently.
A mid-October raid in the city center was the initial documented operation on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Demonstrations against ICE are widespread as are claims of violence and abusive practices.
Latest, a submission filed by civil rights groups alleged medical neglect of women with child in detention centers.
