In the wake of a decisive victory at the Lusail Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver has substantially narrowed the deficit in the title race. He now finds himself just 12 points behind leader McLaren's Lando Norris and leading teammate his McLaren rival, the stage is set for a thrilling three-way title decider at the famous Yas Marina Circuit.
Verstappen's latest win was anything but straightforward. Although he delivered a masterful drive for his team, the victory was largely determined by a costly strategic call from the Woking-based team. Opting to stay on track during an early safety car period, the team inadvertently handed the race lead to their rival, who seized the moment without hesitation.
"I'm looking forward to it, I'm eager to go there and fight for it," Verstappen commented. "I approach it with just optimism. I'll push to the limit I can but at the same time, even without the title, I still know that I had a fantastic season."
This outlook he claims alleviates the weight of expectation. The goal for the last race is straightforward: to extract every single element from himself and the machine.
The incredible part of this championship charge truly astonishing is the margin he has recovered. After the Dutch Grand Prix in late August, he was an enormous over a century of points behind the championship leader Oscar Piastri and had essentially conceded his title chances.
The shift began with significant technical upgrades introduced by his team at the Monza. Modifications to the vehicle's underbody and aerodynamic package rectified ongoing performance deficits, allowing the driver to feel comfortable with the car once more.
From then on, the results has been completely formidable, racking up a quintet of triumphs and multiple podiums. He made sure to praise the teamwork behind this resurgence.
"We have achieved victories where maybe we shouldn't have, by executing the correct decision as a unit," he explained. "The way I work with my team on the pit wall and the entire crew... we are deeply connected."
With the paddock arrive in Abu Dhabi, the points situation is perfectly defined.
The intensity falls squarely on the papaya-colored cars, who have seen a sizable lead slip away due to recent setbacks, including a twin DSQ in Las Vegas. From his perspective, this position creates an atmosphere of freedom, transforming the last event into a pure shot at the title with everything to gain.
