The loved ones of teens missing after a tragic fire at a bar in a Switzerland's alpine town are confronting an agonising period of uncertainty for official news and pleading for any details about their children online.
The inferno engulfed the a popular bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Alps of south-west Switzerland, in the early hours of New Year's Day. Circulated video depict the ceiling catching alight as beverages with fireworks are held aloft.
Authorities have warned that it could take considerable time to identify the fatalities of the fire, which claimed the lives of four dozen individuals and wounded another 119. Authorities noted on the latest update that 113 of the injured have been accounted for, with work ongoing to locate the remaining few.
In the waiting period, loved ones have been using social media to request clues about their friends who were at the bar that evening.
The whereabouts of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are still unconfirmed, according to an appeal from his mother.
The who lives of a town near Lausanne, told a local newspaper that she had gone back to the city to check whether he was in the medical facility, while his other parent did the equivalent search in Bern, but was unsuccessful.
"It feels like a terrible dream, a horror. The options are finding my son in the morgue, or I find him in critical condition. It's terrible," she said.
She explained that some of his companions had been located with burns covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they went through an absolute nightmare."
The Italy's government has said that a number of of its citizens are still unaccounted for.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old promising athlete, originally from Italy but now residing in the UAE.
The Italian Golf Federation has said that he is no longer with us, without mentioning the tragedy, paying tribute to a "young athlete who embodied passion and authentic values."
His father, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around midnight. An official spokesperson has indicated that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is also unaccounted for. His mother explained that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with a group and ended up at the bar.
"A close friend told me they fled after the fire erupted and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he couldn't see him anymore," she said, adding he had been wearing a identifiable piece of jewelry.
One of his educators commented, "He was known for his good nature and positive demeanor, coupled with great maturity. Often ask if help out."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Swiss and Greek nationality but lives full-time in the country, was also present on New Year's Eve, according to media.
Her sibling has posted an urgent request online, saying the family has had "no news" regarding the teenager or the three friends she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Consular authorities from her country of origin say they are continuing to monitor the situation.
