One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
Summers remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their progress".
Summers, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
The recently released emails showed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 arrest for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it understood his choice to step down.
"We value his significant contributions and the insight he offered to the governing body," the company remarked.
This news arrives after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to approve a measure that would mandate the US justice department to make public its files on Epstein.
The measure will subsequently head to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. The President has stated he intends to sign the bill, after changing his view on the subject following pushback from his followers.
A group of Epstein-connected messages released by the Congressional committee last week included several well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any criminal activity by those figures.
The messages indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the official to prominent world leaders.
After the messages were made available with the wider community, he said he assumed "total ownership for my poor decision to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he desired "to rebuild faith and fix relationships with the people nearest to me".
The professor held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He presided over the university from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public duties recently on Monday, he said he would continue his educational duties.
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive research organization in the capital where he was a prominent member, confirmed that the economist was not affiliated with the institution.
Summers joined the directorate of the AI company, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
