South Dakota's governor, acting as Donald Trump's top security official, referred to Chicago as "a war zone" on Sunday. This occurred following government officers shot a woman, and the governor of Illinois accused the federal government of worsening the crisis rather than fixing it.
Speaking on Fox News Sunday morning, Noem targeted the Chicago mayor, Brandon Johnson. The mayor has publicly opposed of the Trump administration’s immigration operations and deployment of the state troops in Illinois, a measure he called "unhinged and unhealthy".
"It’s wrong, there should be consequences for that and for leaders that speak out and knowingly lie about the actual conditions," remarked. "His city is a battlefield and he is dishonest so that lawbreakers can enter and destroy people’s lives."
These comments followed the president's order to deploy 300 members of the state guard to Chicago, with instructions to protect government agents and property. The move occurred just weeks after military personnel were dispatched to Washington, where the commander-in-chief took control of the local police in what he called a "clampdown" on crime, a strategy now extending to a string of other US cities. "We will address Chicago likely soon," the president stated previously.
Noem defended the administration’s course of action, stating on Fox that residents supported the federal involvement. "Residents know that where we have gone we have increased freedom," she remarked. "Safety has improved, we have got a thousand criminals that are off the streets of Chicago, just because our presence is established."
Speaking on a CNN program Sunday, the Democratic Illinois governor, JB Pritzker, accused the administration of fueling the problem instead of solving it. "They are the ones who are turning it into a battlefield," he said.
"They must leave of Chicago. Unless they concentrate on the worst of the worst, which is what the commander-in-chief promised they are going to do, they need to get the heck out."
Federal officers on Saturday shot and injured a woman while shooting at an individual who attempted to hit them. The injured female was a US citizen and was armed with a firearm, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated, noting that the woman was accused in a federal agency alert last week of revealing agents' private information.
The governor also denounced the action in a post on a social media site on Saturday, stating: "The Trump Administration’s security agency presented a demand: mobilize your forces, or we shall." Pritzker called the decision "completely unacceptable and against American values," and noted that it had been made "without our consent".
