An officer of the Kenyan police force positioned at one of the access points of the State House in Nairobi has died after being struck by an arrow, officials have said.
Authorities stated that on Monday morning, a man aged 56, armed with a bow and arrow set, advanced toward police at the presidential residence entrance and was commanded to disarm. Instead, he advanced and struck Police Constable Matanka in the chest area.
The policeman was immediately taken to medical facility but died while undergoing treatment, based on a law enforcement announcement.
The attack has raised questions about possible security lapses as the presidential residence is one of the country's most strictly protected locations.
The officer's remains is now in a funeral home and there will be a post-mortem soon.
An inquiry is also ongoing to establish the reason for the attack.
Kenyan press are indicating that the dead policeman had been among those screening vehicles entering the official residence.
The suspect, who had reportedly disguised himself as a homeless person holding a bag hiding the implements, was arrested subsequent to the attack.
Recorded video, released by domestic broadcaster later on Monday, showed a detained suspect with noticeable harm. He was in a police vehicle and was purportedly being taken to hospital.
The individual is expected to appear in court in the coming days, Kenyan news are indicating.
"Our law enforcement agency denounces this heinous act and applauds the personnel for their rapid reaction, which avoided additional casualties," police spokesperson the official commented.
The official expressed sympathy to the family of the dead policeman, stating that the policeman had "given his life in the line of duty".
This event has triggered important concerns about security measures at important official sites across Kenya.
Specialists are attentively observing the current inquiry and awaiting suggestions for better safety arrangements.
