It began as a modest program that the commentator, Dave Lamb, thought “would be snuck out in the daytime and nobody would ever see it”.
But Come Dine With Me has grown into a worldwide sensation, celebrating 20 years since its premiere with a special edition starring teenagers and launching its fiftieth – a French-speaking installment in the Maghreb.
{Over the past two ten-year spans, participants on the dinner party program have prepared dishes from savory trifle to grasshopper cheesecake in their efforts to delight.
Internationally there have been more than 20,000 episodes televised and over 60,000 courses presented. Over the years the series has charted society’s change in interpersonal, culinary and home decor tastes.
“It has served as a kind of historical portrait,” commented its director, Henry Hainault.
{Lamb remarked that in the UK, competitors have become, “more refined in their methods”. Mike Beale, the head of the production network, running the studio behind the show, added they have progressed from simple dishes such as traditional fare to more elaborate cuisine with the advent of numerous cooking programs.
One of the reasons for its popularity, he stated, is households can watch it collectively, but also because “it remains among the rare series that celebrates individuals in their personal spaces …furthermore fundamentally audiences are fascinated by others”.
“It features five people that wouldn’t always be having dinner together, this is how the show began and it continues to succeed to this day.”
{Lamb values that it shows varied people can coexist: “It offers a truly varied representation of the residents of Britain … besides it moves around the country, but you encounter a many various kinds of individuals on the show and they blend quite comfortably with one another. It feels very comforting that that UK identity is incredibly multicultural and very open-minded … it feels that it can do a job unifying the audience a little currently.”
{The UK program has produced besides unforgettable incidents – a pet snake previously made a mess on a furniture, one contestant performed a rap in the Thai language and a different one was caught cutting corners with food from a eatery – but also enduring friendships (participants still meet monthly), partnerships and including a baby.
{And it has furthermore united individuals with opposing viewpoints at the same table. The executive recounts that the Israeli version showcases Arabic and Israeli competitors: “It really bring individuals in one place … from different backgrounds who wouldn’t always cooperate.”
{The best-received dish across the series is tiramisu, but some of the worst-rated, he noted, was a UK competitor’s cheesecake variation. “An observation might note concerning the British edition, I think it’s likely low down the ranking in terms of the standard of culinary skills,” he said.
{Beale added that, in the French version, the food is taken “very seriously”. Further cooking variations internationally feature the Central European editions including a “many potatoes” and the Mexico’s edition numerous legume-focused recipes.
{A nation’s cultural norms also leads to variations. Beale commented: “It remains intriguing how different regions localises [the show] or embraces it.” He explained that Germany enjoys experimenting with innovative concepts, basing the program in a palace for an episode, while in the Turkish edition the primary aspect is the amusement the competitors deliver to delight their peers.
{The series has always been popular with the youth and from November, Channel 4 will broadcast a adolescent new version. Hainault commented he had respect for the teens, as for “the majority, this is the first time they’ve ever cooked for guests. Occasionally, the initial instance they’ve ever visited to someone else’s residences to eat dinner and with peers.” Surprisingly a pair had never even eaten a liquid dish before, “because it appeared too liquidy”.
Worldwide, the format has evolved before, with famous versions and a pair adaptation – which allowed the concept to air to the Arab world, where earlier it had not been shown due to the mixing of men and women.
{One of the common observations that transcends cultures, noted he, is “at its heart, there is a huge gap between individuals’ opinions of their own abilities and the individual they really present to the audience. This disparity between who people think they are and who other people think they are is where plenty of the humor arises.”
