Israel Authorizes Nineteen Fresh Outposts in Occupied Palestinian Territories

The nation's top security body has formally approved the establishment of 19 fresh communities in the disputed Palestinian territories, signaling a sustained push for territorial growth.

Hardline Treasury Chief Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and advocated for the step together with Defence Minister Israel Katz, declared that the approval was about preventing the formation of a Palestinian state.

Under international law, Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered unlawful.

The move has sparked condemnation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has previously stated that Israel's "unceasing" growth of communities heightens frictions, curtails Palestinian use of land, and undermines the prospects of a sovereign Palestine.

Rising Tensions and Diplomatic Repercussions

Violence in the occupied West Bank has increased sharply since the war in Gaza erupted in October 2023, intensifying fears that settlement expansion could deepen Israel's occupation and undermine the chance for a two-state solution.

The concept of two states refers to the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its capital, largely along the lines that existed before the 1967 Six-Day Middle East war.

Since coming to power in 2022, the incumbent government in Jerusalem has ramped up the green-lighting of fresh communities and initiated the legalisation process for unauthorised settler outposts, classifying them as "neighbourhoods" of existing settlements.

Sustained Expansion

The most recent decision brings the cumulative figure of communities authorized over the last three years to 69, according to the Finance Minister.

These authorizations are announced only a few days after the UN said that settlement expansion had hit its peak since 2017.

The most recent round of approvals features the revival of a pair of communities — Ganim and Kadim — which were removed about in 2005.

Earlier this year, Israel approved twenty-two additional settlements in the territories - labeled as the largest expansion in many years.

Additionally, the Israeli government also approved projects in August to build more than three thousand residences in the controversial E1 corridor between the capital and the Maale Adumim community, a initiative that had been on hold for many years amid intense foreign objection.

On that occasion, the Finance Minister said it would "put to rest the idea of a Palestinian state."

Demographic Realities and International Response

Approximately seven hundred thousand Israeli settlers reside in around one hundred and sixty settlements in the occupied territories, according to the Israel-based monitoring organization Peace Now. This is land that Palestinians seek for a prospective sovereign nation.

This ongoing construction has angered Arab states who have consistently said it undermines prospects for a two-state solution.

It has also fueled anxieties about the potential formal annexation of the disputed territories.

Ex- American President Donald Trump had previously admonished Israel about such a move, telling TIME magazine that the country would forfeit all its support from the United States if it happened.

In a policy change, the United Kingdom - along with other countries including Australia and Canada - formally recognized a State of Palestine, a notable although primarily ceremonial shift in official stance.

The Israeli government strongly rejected this step, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying that a Palestinian state "is not going to occur."
