Police in the Caucasian nation have clashed with anti-government protesters attempting to breach the presidential palace in the capital, Tbilisi.
Security forces employed water cannons and pepper spray to scatter the demonstrators.
The South Caucasus nation has been experiencing turmoil since the governing incumbent party claimed success in last year's general election, which the EU-supporting opposition claims was stolen. Since then, the administration has paused negotiations on entering the EU.
The demonstration took place on the same day as municipal polls, which the opposition is largely abstaining from following a government crackdown. One organiser had previously called for leaders of the Georgian Dream party to be arrested.
Brandishing Georgian and EU banners, a large crowd of protesters marched in central Tbilisi on Saturday.
A key figure, vocalist the protest leader, read out a declaration appealing to the personnel of the ministry of internal affairs to heed the demands of the people and to immediately apprehend several senior figures from the Georgian Dream party.
Demonstrators then marched on the presidential palace and tried to invade the premises, prompting security forces to deploy pepper spray.
The demonstration follows a repressive measures on protesters, independent media and political opposition in the past few months, with the majority of the figureheads of the pro-Western dissent now incarcerated.
