Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he plans to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections are over.
"Yes, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," the governor commented when pressed about giving serious thought to a campaign for president post the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
Newsom's time in office as governor wraps up in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he cautioned that any determination is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he remarked.
The California governor has stepped forward as a prominent opponent of the former president's team, using his digital presence and championing a initiative that would expand Democratic representation in Congress in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has drawn criticism from adversaries.
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on a major news network. Duffy announced intentions to withhold federal funds from the state and suggested suspending the power to grant trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160 million from California," Duffy stated, in the wake of a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused fatalities and injured individuals.
Newsom's office noted that the federal government had approved the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to receive a CDL under federal law.
Duffy had before announced he was holding back $40m from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for truck drivers.
"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp federal law," his administration said in a recent statement responding to the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a death rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
A recently conducted survey showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters indicated that the governor should run for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has increased to an average of a third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an typical level of more than 40% to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, the governor stated while visiting several key regions that he had "no clue" about his intentions for 2028.
He noted his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.
"The idea that a guy who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the American people."
