Individuals from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the entertainment world are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on his platform to describe the late director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Police have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a significant amount.
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
This is a vile and vile comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
A number of GOP elected officials also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also mentioned struggles with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared members in his political party to justify the comments.
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally after the shooting of a different individual.
Providing a element of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
