A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us locate the footage.

Our team is verifying images and video circulated this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the site of where the images were from was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.

Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
