One-time NFL signal-caller Mark Sanchez is looking at prison following facing charges with serious assault this week.
This legal action supplements several additional legal counts filed against him previously in the aftermath of a heated dispute earlier in the weekend. The legal counts included assault causing harm, intoxication in a public space, and unlawful entry of a vehicle amid the altercation in the early hours of Saturday that resulted in Sanchez admitted to the hospital with knife injuries.
The recent accusation involves a high-level criminal offense involving “serious bodily injury”, potentially carrying a prison term of up to six years and a fine of a significant sum.
“It doesn’t matter who you are. I don’t care what you do for a living. Where you live doesn’t matter. If you come in to our city, commit violence, we will employ every available resource to hold you accountable.”
Sanchez was stabbed and exposed to chemical irritant by a senior driver amid the altercation in the city, where the one-time Jets quarterback was set to analyze an NFL game between the Colts and Las Vegas Raiders recently. Reports claim he accosted the individual, identified by initials in the official document, at a delivery area near a lodging establishment. According to PT he was gathering discarded oil from the location when the individual, who appeared intoxicated, tried to access the vehicle. He asserts he was told by Sanchez the hotel’s management said he did not want the oil picked up.
The driver stated he thought the ex-quarterback intended to cause harm and used pepper spray to protect himself. When the spray did not stop his approach, PT said he used a knife on the ex-athlete “two or three times”. Sanchez then allegedly pushed the driver into a dumpster before “a look of shock” came across his face and he “took off”. Detectives have reviewed video footage of the altercation. Observers stated Sanchez and PT filmed each other with their phones throughout the event.
According to the affidavit, he stated to officers he recalled attempting to grasp a window. He was unable to recall the identity of his assailant or where it took place.
This event resulted in Sanchez with injuries to his upper body while PT suffered deep cuts to his face. On Monday, Marion county prosecutor the legal representative stated the driver’s wounds were serious. He received medical attention in a medical facility for his wounds, which did not endanger his life, preceding his detention on Saturday. He is due to appear at a court session this week.
“We’re literally talking about a dispute regarding vehicle placement.”
The prosecutor noted that a number of witnesses as well as security cameras had provided authorities with a detailed account of the altercation.
Another former NFL quarterback, Brady Quinn, stepped in for Sanchez in the television coverage for Sunday’s game. The network addressed the event briefly on their weekend broadcast, with host Curt Menefee saying: “we are all processing the situation … we extend our sympathies to Mark, his relatives, and everyone affected.”
He began with Fox in the past few years and is involved in broadcast content.
Prior to his media work, he was active 10 seasons in the NFL with various organizations, including the New York Jets, who selected him early in the draft of the 2009 draft. He later played for the Eagles and Cowboys. He ended his career in the summer of 2019 and shortly thereafter started with ESPN’s college football coverage before transitioning to Fox.
