Democratic officials voiced anger after Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and stated they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.
The clip, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who previously worked in military or defense positions.
"Like us, you all took an pledge to defend and support this founding document," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can decline unlawful commands, you can decline illegal orders, you should refuse unlawful commands. No one has to execute orders that contravene the legal system or our constitution."
The clip seemed to provoke a angry reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he declared: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our Nation. Their words cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader issued a joint announcement censuring the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no role in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all worked our nation with tremendous loyalty and distinction. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to ensure the security of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme digital publications and retract his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the statement continued.
The representatives who participated in the video also published a statement.
"We are former service members and defense specialists who value this nation and swore an oath to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath is permanent, and we intend to honor it. No threat, coercion, or call for violence will deter us from that fundamental duty."
"What's most telling is that the president deems it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to restate the law," they continued. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their protection as they fulfill their vow to the constitution and obligation to obey only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "All citizens must unite and denounce the ex-president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the execution of public representatives."
He continued: "This is an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and absolutely."
The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of the legislature telling troops to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in American history."
The GOP official also allegedly informed journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of treason" but that "legal experts have to analyze the wording and decide all that."
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute elected officials?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the president is addressing," the representative declared. "We see current representatives of the federal government who conspired to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to defy the president's proper directives."
She stated: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the chain of command, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to casualties, it can result in confusion, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
