Bristol's Backyard Wine Gardens: Foot-Stomping Grapes in Urban Gardens

Every quarter of an hour or so, an older diesel-powered railway carriage pulls into a spray-painted station. Close by, a police siren pierces the near-constant road noise. Commuters hurry past falling apart, ivy-draped fencing panels as storm clouds gather.

It is perhaps the last place you anticipate to find a well-established vineyard. But one local grower has managed to 40 mature vines sagging with plump purplish grapes on a sprawling garden plot situated between a line of historic homes and a commuter railway just north of the city town centre.

"I've noticed people hiding heroin or whatever in the shrubbery," says Bayliss-Smith. "Yet you simply continue ... and continue caring for your vines."

The cameraman, 46, a filmmaker who runs a kombucha drinks business, is among several local vintner. He has pulled together a loose collective of cultivators who make vintage from several discreet city grape gardens tucked away in back gardens and community plots throughout the city. It is sufficiently underground to have an formal title so far, but the group's messaging chat is named Vineyard Dreams.

City Wine Gardens Across the World

So far, the grower's plot is the sole location registered in the Urban Vineyards Association's upcoming global directory, which features better-known urban wineries such as the eighteen hundred plants on the hillsides of the French capital's renowned artistic district neighbourhood and more than three thousand vines with views of and within Turin. The Italian-based charitable organization is at the vanguard of a movement reviving urban grape cultivation in historic wine-producing countries, but has discovered them throughout the globe, including urban centers in East Asia, South Asia and Central Asia.

"Grape gardens assist cities stay more eco-friendly and ecologically varied. These spaces protect land from construction by creating permanent, yielding agricultural units inside urban environments," says the organization's leader.

Like all wines, those created in urban areas are a result of the earth the plants grow in, the vagaries of the climate and the individuals who tend the grapes. "A bottle of wine represents the charm, local spirit, environment and history of a city," adds the spokesperson.

Mystery Polish Grapes

Back in the city, the grower is in a urgent timeline to gather the grapevines he cultivated from a plant abandoned in his garden by a Eastern European household. Should the precipitation comes, then the pigeons may seize their chance to feast again. "Here we have the mystery Eastern European variety," he comments, as he removes bruised and mouldy berries from the shimmering bunches. "We don't really know their exact classification, but they're definitely hardy. Unlike noble varieties – Burgundy grapes, Chardonnay and additional renowned European varieties – you need not treat them with pesticides ... this could be a special variety that was developed by the Soviets."

Group Activities Across the City

The other members of the group are also making the most of bright periods between bursts of fall precipitation. At a rooftop garden overlooking Bristol's shimmering harbour, where medieval merchant vessels once bobbed with casks of vintage from France and Spain, Katy Grant is harvesting her rondo grapes from approximately 50 plants. "I adore the aroma of the grapevines. It is so reminiscent," she says, stopping with a container of fruit resting on her shoulder. "It's the scent of Provence when you roll down the car windows on vacation."

Grant, fifty-two, who has spent over 20 years working for humanitarian organizations in conflict zones, unexpectedly took over the grape garden when she moved back to the UK from East Africa with her household in 2018. She felt an overwhelming duty to look after the grapevines in the yard of their recently acquired property. "This vineyard has already survived three different owners," she explains. "I deeply appreciate the concept of natural stewardship – of handing this down to someone else so they keep cultivating from the soil."

Terraced Gardens and Natural Production

A short walk away, the final two members of the group are hard at work on the steep inclines of Avon Gorge. Jo Scofield has established over one hundred fifty plants perched on terraces in her wild half-acre garden, which descends towards the silty River Avon. "Visitors frequently express amazement," she notes, indicating the interwoven vineyard. "It's astonishing to them they are viewing grapevine lines in a city street."

Today, Scofield, sixty, is picking clusters of deep violet dark berries from lines of plants slung across the cliff-side with the assistance of her child, Luca. Scofield, a wildlife and conservation film-maker who has contributed to Netflix's nature programming and television network's gardening shows, was inspired to cultivate vines after observing her neighbour's vines. She has learned that hobbyists can make intriguing, pleasurable traditional vintage, which can sell for upwards of seven pounds a glass in the increasing quantity of wine bars specialising in low-processing wines. "It's just incredibly satisfying that you can truly create quality, natural wine," she says. "It is quite on trend, but in reality it's resurrecting an old way of making vintage."

"During foot-stomping the fruit, all the natural microorganisms are released from the skins into the liquid," explains Scofield, partially submerged in a container of small branches, seeds and crimson juice. "This represents how wines were made traditionally, but commercial producers introduce preservatives to eliminate the wild yeast and subsequently add a commercially produced yeast."

Challenging Conditions and Creative Approaches

In the immediate vicinity sprightly retiree another cultivator, who inspired his neighbor to plant her vines, has gathered his companions to harvest white wine varieties from one hundred plants he has arranged precisely across multiple levels. The former teacher, a Lancashire-born physical education instructor who taught at Bristol University cultivated an interest in wine on regular visits to France. However it is a challenge to cultivate this particular variety in the humidity of the valley, with temperature fluctuations sweeping in and out from the nearby estuary. "I wanted to produce Burgundian wines in this location, which is a bit bonkers," admits the retiree with a smile. "Chardonnay is slow-maturing and very sensitive to fungal infections."
