Blast Costs Three Law Enforcement Officers While Executing Property Removal Procedure in Italy

A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen people got wounded in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews went into the residence close to the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals got detained at the site and one more individual who ran away subsequent to the explosion was found not long after. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area displayed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the residence was subject to an eviction order due to debts accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the police arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents triggered the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed reporters.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident included eleven more officers of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a emergency responder.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor believed the detonation had taken place on a floor above the entrance and stated to reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas cylinders being activated”.

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed local news, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
