The local council mentioned they could not take off the eyes without harming the artwork.

A young person from the Land Down Under has faced legal proceedings after reportedly vandalizing a large art piece of a mythical creature by affixing googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated via phone at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in South Australia on Tuesday, facing with one count of property damage.

Officials commented at the moment of the September incident, the local council said that CCTV footage showed a person putting fake eyes on the artwork, which locals have nicknamed the “Cast in Blue”.

Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and told the court she was unwell, according to news outlets, with the magistrate advising her to find a lawyer before her next court date in December.

The following day the alleged incident, the city leader stated that repairs to the popular community sculpture would be expensive as the adhesive eyes could not be detached without harming the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a cherished public artwork is unacceptable and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin said in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also frustrating to those members of our society who have welcomed the Blue Blob.”

She added the council would seek the “substantial” restoration expenses from those accountable for the damage.

When the artwork was initially suggested, it drew mixed reactions from the local community due to its cost and design.

Priced at A$136,000 (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the sculpture depicts a legendary giant animal, with the creators influenced by an prehistoric anteater-like marsupial found in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
