Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader Donald Trump to meet Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has announced.
Recently Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to examine the ongoing hostilities.
A planning session between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was planned for recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a meeting was not "required".
The administration declined to provide further information on why the talks had been delayed.
The US president had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Some reports claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with sources claiming the president had pushed him to give up large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.
Nevertheless, on this week Trump supported a peace initiative backed by Ukraine and European leaders to pause the conflict on the current front line.
"Freeze the lines the way it is," he stated.
Russia has repeatedly pushed back against halting the present battle positions.
Moscow was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, suggesting that halting hostilities would merely represent a short-term truce.
The "underlying reasons" of the conflict needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Moscow's terminology for a range of extensive requirements that involve the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.
The Ukrainian president commented discussions about the current lines were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.
He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to Ukraine.
The Russian president's unplanned conversation with Trump recently came ahead of rumors that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could possibly hit deep into Russia.
Zelensky stated it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he remarked.
