In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
