A Heartbreaking Transformation Just One Year Has Made in the United States

In late October 2024, the environment was utterly separate. Before the American presidential vote, thoughtful citizens could acknowledge the nation's deep flaws – its inequities and disparity – but they could still identify it as the United States. A democratic nation. A place where the rule of law carried weight. A nation headed by a respectable and decent official, despite his advanced age and increasing frailty.

These days, in late October 2025, countless Americans hardly identify the land we live in. People suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and forced into transport, occasionally denied due process. The left side of the presidential residence – is being torn down for a grotesque dance hall. The president is harassing his adversaries or supposed enemies and requesting legal authorities transfer a massive sum of public funds. Uniformed troops are dispatched across metropolitan centers under fabricated reasons. The Pentagon, renamed the Defense Ministry, has practically rid itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny while it uses possibly reaching almost one trillion dollars from citizen taxes. Institutions, attorney offices, journalism organizations are yielding from leader's menaces, and wealthy elites are regarded as members of the royal family.

“The US, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the world’s leading democracy, has fallen over the brink into authoritarianism and extremism,” an American historian, wrote recently. “Ultimately, swifter than I believed likely, it transpired in this country.”

One awakes to new horrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how deeply lost we are, and the speed at which it occurred.

Nevertheless, we know that Trump was legitimately chosen. Following his deeply disturbing previous administration and even after the warnings linked to the knowledge of Project 2025 – following the president personally said publicly he intended to be a dictator solely at the start – enough Americans selected him over the other candidate.

While alarming as today's circumstances are, it's more daunting to recognize that we are just nine months under this leadership. How will three more years of this downfall find us? And if that period turns into a more extended duration, because there is nobody to stop this ruler from opting that a third term is essential, maybe for national security reasons?

Certainly, all is not lost. There will be congressional elections in 2026 which might establish an alternate governmental control, should Democrats retake either chamber of the legislature. We have government representatives who are attempting to apply a degree of oversight, for example Democratic congressmen currently starting a probe concerning the try to cash appropriation from legal authorities.

And a leadership election three years from now could start our journey to recovery exactly as last year’s election set us on this disappointing trajectory.

There are numerous residents demonstrating in public spaces throughout communities, like they performed recently during anti-authority protests.

A former official, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is rising”, just as it did following the Red Scare in that decade or amid the Vietnam war protests or during the Watergate scandal.

It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will prove to be right.

Meanwhile, the big questions persist: will the nation return to normalcy? Can it retrieve its status in the world and its devotion to the rule of law?

Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment succeeded temporarily, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My cynical mind indicates that the final scenario is true; that all may indeed be gone. My hopeful heart, nevertheless, tells me that we must try, through all methods available.

Personally, as an observer of the press, that involves encouraging reporters to adhere, more fully, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For different individuals, it might involve engaging with congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or finding ways to defend voting rights.

Not even one year prior, we existed in a very different place. A year from now? Or three years from now? The truth is, we cannot predict. Our sole course is to strive to not give up.
